Here is an abbreviated list of the many community activities that the Honeoye Falls/Mendon Rotary Club is involved in on an on-going basis:
Angel Tree
This project involves placing paper angels on Christmas Trees in various locations during the holiday season. Each Angel is numbered and represents someone in our community who is in need. Their identities are not revealed to the club. The schools and churches identify the recipients by age and gender.
Food Baskets
Each of the seven churches in Honeoye Falls and Mendon, are asked to suggest up to three individuals or families that would benefit from Food Baskets for the holidays. Each Basket is customized to fill the needs of the families or individuals. The Baskets are assembled and each recipient is notified a week prior to their delivery to ensure that someone will be there to receive it.
Camp Haccamo
Camp Haccamo is a camp for disabled children supported by fifteen Rotary Clubs in Monroe County. Each Club has a building which they constructed or raised the funds to construct. It is administered by a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of two representatives from each Rotary Club. There is a hired Director, Assistant, and part-time Secretary. Much of the work is done by the Rotarians themselves. The Camp operates 8 weeks in the summer to provide a bit of relief to weary caregivers of the disabled. Nurses are hired during this period to assist where needed.
Tree Planting
Every April since 1929, our Club has planted street-side trees in the village of Honeoye Falls and in the Hamlet of Mendon. The Tree Committee takes note of where trees are needed and orders them. We meet a little early and have a buffet dinner so hat we may quickly get to our task. We then divide into groups and go to the planting sights. Recently, the holes have been pre-dug by equipment to make our task less “back-breaking”.
Christmas Trees
For the past several years, Chuck Meisenzahl has gathered Rotarians to distribute Christmas trees to those in need in our community. We use the list of people to whom we send food baskets first, as well as many others who may be in need of a tree.
In early December, Chuck and a group of Rotarians take a truck to the Brown Farm, who donates about 25 trees. They load up the trees and spend a few hours delivering them.
